In recent years Dublin has been quietly undergoing a renaissance. In fact, if James Joyce or Samuel Becket were still alive they probably wouldn't recognize the city. Economic boom has paid for the city to have a facelift, and today's shimmering office blocks are as much a part of Dublin 's skyline as the handsome Georgian facades. Dublin 's keen to move forward without forgetting the past; and it's this tug-of-war between tradition and youthful energy that makes Dublin such a popular city break destination.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the gentrified district of Temple Bar. Once a warren of ramshackle streets it's now an idiosyncratic mix of coffee shops, historic pubs and chic brasseries. It's also home to arguably the best nightlife in Ireland . Guinness is an essential part of a Dublin city break and you won't find a better drop of the black-stuff anywhere else in the world. In fact, Dubliners are so proud of their beloved beverage that they've created a museum to celebrate the success of their stout; The Guinness Storehouse . With more than a thousand pubs, excellent live music and everyone up for the craic the morning after the night before might not go according to plan. However, as brisk stroll around the 1,760 acres of Dublin 's Phoenix Park should get things back on track.
Dublin wears its cultural heritage on its sleeve and it's only a matter of time until you find yourself treading in the same footsteps as the city's literary heavyweights. George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker have all called the city home along with a good crop of artists such as Francis Bacon and Jack B. Yeats. The city's impressive collection of museums and galleries could easily swallow up an entire weekend, and even those with the fussiest of cultural appetites will find something to suit their taste buds. However, the Dublin Writers' Museum, the National Gallery of Ireland and the Hugh Lane Gallery of Modern Art are too good to miss.
No matter how you pass your time in Dublin ; you can guarantee that there will never be a dull moment and that you'll be surprised by the warm heart of the city and the people who live there.© A2Z City Breaks
